Natural Light Workshop Photos
I had the opportunity to attend a photography workshop focusing on the use of natural light for portraiture work. I was invited to attend by Howard Nowlan after expressing my interest in learning more about portrait work.
So when I first arrived I was extremely nervous. This is the first time I have done anything like this let alone working with a model, Kat who was easy to work with and get on with. I also only realised after the session that my camera (Nikon D40) does have a black and white option. For some reason I got it in my head that it didn't have one as it is only an entry level DSLR. This wasn't a major issue as I converted to black and white during post processing.
Also helping out were Maureen Douglas-Green and Tony Smith who gave great inspiration and mini lectures.
So after listening to Howards introduction and pointers we got straight into it......
So I thought I knew everything about my camera. Not so. I completely forgot what I was doing. I was constantly telling myself "low f-stop, larger aperature, more light". The smallest f-stop on my lenses were only 4.5 so I struggled a bit with the low lighting conditions. But I was quite pleased with the final results.
Things started off ok. A fully clothed model. I can handle that. I was trying to take in advice from Maureen, Tony and Howard but ended up creating random photos. I was impressed what could be achieved with a single window of light. I actually quite the look of these photos.

So that was the morning session. The afternoon session was more about fine art. This I found the hardest having never done any studies into the human body. It was an interesting experience. It was good to hang back and let others do the direction which gave me more ideas. I found Maureen's instruction very helpful and not too 'dictatorial'.

So those were the best of the bunch. Constructive criticisim is most welcome. Would I do it again. Yeah!!!
